Sustainable Montana is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization. Our mission is to work with individuals and organizations to raise the quality of life for low and middle class families, children in need, and people with disabilities. Our approach is to give a hand up rather than a hand out. By assisting in a way that enables people to help themself is much more effective and is far more efficient. We connect directly with people in distressed areas to solve real problems as quickly, inexpensively and intelligently as possible. Our ultimate purpose is to protect life and to ensure respect for all human beings.

The reason why...
I can’t even remember her name. That is what bothers me the most. I don’t know if anyone does. I took this photo in 1998 in an Eastern European orphanage on my very first humanitarian aid trip. She was dying before our eyes.
The one thing I remember was the orphanage director telling us through our interpreter that her condition was completely curable but that they did not have the resources. They buried her in the graveyard in the back of the orphanage that is also pictured. They didn’t even put her name on the marker. She is forgotten except for this picture that I look at often. Friends, there are way too many grave markers there.
My oldest child was 6 months old at the time and I knew I could not go back and just enjoy my idyllic life and pretend that these children did not exist. We sent this orphanage what they needed so we could help stop this from happening. We can do so much when we come together. By Matt Hartford
